What is a root canal treatment?

A root canal treatment is a procedure that involves removing inflamed or damaged tissue from inside a tooth and cleaning, filling and sealing the remaining space.

A root canal has different steps:

Step 1. An opening is made to access the pulp chamber

Step 2. The pulp is removed from its chamber and canals. Instruments known as “files” are used to clean and shape the canals. A temporary filling is placed in the opening to seal the tooth until the next visit.

Step 3. The canals are filled and sealed with a material known as thermoplastic obturator, this material prevents bacteria from re-entering the canals. A temporary filling is place on the tooth, and it will later be replaced with a permanent filling and/or crown.

After the root canal treatment has been completed, Dr Salvador will discuss with you how it should be restored. In some cases, you may need a dental post and/or core before the crown can be placed.
