What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a very common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep.

Breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes. They often occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour. Typically, normal breathing then starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound.

Sleep apnea usually is a chronic (ongoing) condition that disrupts your sleep. You often move out of deep sleep and into light sleep when your breathing pauses or becomes shallow.

This results in poor sleep quality that makes you tired during the day. Sleep apnea is one of the leading causes of excessive daytime sleepiness.

Major signs and symptoms of sleep apnea

• Loud and chronic snoring
• Choking, snorting, or gasping during sleep
• Long pauses in breathing
• Daytime sleepiness, no matter how much time you spend in bed

During sleep, muscles and soft tissues in the throat and mouth relax, shrinking the airway. This increases the velocity of airflow during breathing. As the velocity of required air is increased, soft tissues like the soft palate and uvula vibrate. The vibrations of these tissues result in “noisy breathing” or snoring.

Oral Treatment Devices For Snoring and Sleep Apnea:

Silent Nite®

Silent Nite is a custom-fabricated dental device that moves the lower jaw into a forward position, increasing space in the airway tube and reducing air velocity and soft tissue vibration. Special connectors are attached to transparent flexible upper and lower splints.

aveoTSD® Anti-Snoring Device

Snoring is a serious health condition that increases the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, cardiovascular disorders, heart failure, daytime fatigue, dementia, memory problems, obesity, diabetes and

depression. The aveoTSD® is a simple treatment for snoring that will reenergize your life. Traditional mandibular advancement devices indirectly move the tongue forward by moving the mandible (lower jaw). But the aveoTSD directly suctions onto the tongue, preventing it from falling back into the throat and increasing airway volume.Made of medical-grade Dupont silicone, the aveoTSD is the only anti-snoring device that is indicated for anyone – including those who wear full dentures!

TAP® / TAP 3 TL

Tap-Tap-3-TL-Sleep-ApneaThe TAP® device provides a powerful prescription for snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The TAP was designed to keep the airway open to allow for air to pass. A constricted or collapsed airway causes snoring and OSA. Both the TAP and TAP 3 TL hold the lower jaw in a forward position, maintaining a clear airway to reduce snoring and improve breathing.

A hook mechanism attached to the upper tray fits into a socket attached to the lower tray and positions the lower jaw forward, preventing the soft tissue of the throat from collapsing and obstructing the airway. An adjustment key allows the patient to adjust the device until a comfortable and effective position is achieved.

EMA®

EMA-Sleep-Apnea-Treatment-MiamiThe EMA appliance is a custom-made removable intraoral appliance created for noninvasive treatment of snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The appliance is designed to both advance the lower jaw (mandible) and open the bite to allow for less restricted airflow during sleep.

EMA appliances help promote a deeper, more restful sleep by preventing snoring and relieving the symptoms of OSA. The EMA does not interfere with breathing through the mouth, even in cases of congested nasal passages. The EMA has many options for patient advancement with five strap lengths and four different elastic tension options. Non-restricted side-to-side or front-to-back movements of the jaw are possible while wearing the appliance due to varying elastic bands. The EMA is indicated for patients with either a full or partial set of natural teeth.
